What's a Dray?

A dray is a large flat cart with four wheels which is pulled by horses.

Here at Wadworth we currently have one Shire horse, Sam, who pulls our dray around Devizes to deliver beer to local pubs.  Sam is the latest in a long line of Shire horses which, apart from a brief interruption, have served Wadworth for over 125 years.

We have several drays serving different purposes over the years including being used at county shows and appearances at our pubs.  This year we’ll be at Badminton 4-8th May, Bath & West 2-4th June and the New Forest Show 26-28th July.  Watch this space for which pubs we’ll be visiting throughout the summer.

Find out more about Sam and our horse team Martin and Callum Whittle, who are 5th generation Wadworth horsemen, by visiting the Wadworth website.  If you’d like to meet Sam (and Martin and Callum!), he often comes to the Brewery Tap on Wednesdays or Thursdays so like the Brewery Tap on Facebook to find out when he’ll be there.

Just for fun. Question of the month
Q. A Shire horse weighs about a ton but how much weight can they pull?
